The author contrasts time-honored standards of satire that were employed with refinement and magnanimity by literary titans like Horace, Juvenal, and Dryden against contemporary satiric practices that the author considers coarse, mean-spirited, and malicious. He underscores how current works of satire have abandoned the classical goal of improving morals and manners in favor of personal attacks and the lampooning of others, often in a manner that exacerbates social divisions. The author demonstrates a deep knowledge of literary history and applies it to his analysis of satire's uses and abuses. This book will captivate anyone interested in the history of satire as well as the fraught relationship between humor, truth, and morality.
