This guide to being a superior in a religious community draws on the writings of the Venerable Father Champagnat, founder of the Little Brothers of Mary, who believed that superiors were vital to the success of religious orders and communities and should strive to embody certain key qualities. The author argues that a good superior should possess sound judgment, solid virtue, good character, and sufficient knowledge. This book focuses on the first of these qualities: sound judgment, and the many ways in which it manifests. Among these is treating the religious under one's care as one would wish to be treated, showing oneself to be strict with oneself and lenient with others, and reserving judgment before acting. Sound judgment also leads a superior to prioritize providing for the needs of the religious in their care and showing compassion for their faults, over personal comfort.
