Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a series of scenes from 16th century London, capturing the bawdy and raucous world of Shakespeare and his friends. The author plunges us into the raucous taverns and bustling streets, providing insight into the lives of the groundlings, moneylenders, rogues and whores that rubbed shoulders with literary giants. We witness a barber-surgeon performing a tooth extraction and bloodletting, all the while regaling his apprentice with tales of famous Latin scholars and Aristotle's wisdom. In another scene, a young man woos a barmaid, all the while being watched by his rival, a swaggering captain from the local garrison. From top to bottom, this book brims with colorful characters, from the grandiose to the depraved, and reveals the surprising and frequently hilarious reality behind some of the greatest names in literary history.
