This book examines the academic life of William Gammell, a 19th-century professor and scholar whose career reflected a commitment to the notion that higher education should prepare students for a life of good works. William Gammell was a pioneering scholar of his time, not only for his work as a teacher but also for his writings on American history and politics. Trained as a minister, Gammell turned to teaching after the death of his father, a prominent Baptist minister. After several years as a tutor, he was appointed to the faculty of Brown University, where he taught for 40 years. Gammell was a dedicated and effective teacher, known for his high standards and his ability to inspire his students. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous articles and books on history and politics. Gammell's work was widely read and helped shape the way Americans thought about their history and their role in the world.
