Ecotopia was founded when northern California, Oregon, and Washington seceded from the Union to create a "stable-state" ecosystem: the perfect balance between human beings and the environment. Now, twenty years later, the isolated, mysterious Ecotopia welcomes its first officially sanctioned American visitor: New York Times-Post reporter Will Weston. Like a modern Gulliver, the skeptical Weston is by turns impressed, horrified, and overwhelmed by Ecotopia's strange practices: employee ownership of farms and businesses, the twenty-hour work week, the fanatical elimination of pollution, mini-cities that defeat overcrowding, devotion to trees bordering on worship, a woman-dominated government, and bloody, ritual war games. Bombarded by innovative, unsettling ideas, set afire by a relationship with a sexually forthright Ecotopian woman, Weston's conflict of values intensifies-and leads to a startling climax.

Softcover. Condition: Good. First thus. Seventeenth printing, also described as the 30th anniversary edition. Inscribed on the title page: "To Danik [sp?], onward to a greener world -- Ernest Callenbach." Uncommon signed. Callenbach's classic novel, first published in 1975, that imagines a sustainable utopia in an imagined Pacific Northwest, written in the form of a diary kept by the reporter William Weston. A nice publishing story, too, because Callenbach and several friends self-published the book under the banner of Banyan Tree Books when he couldn't find a traditional publisher. It went on to be a bestseller and remains in print. A good plus copy in wrappers on account of a subtle wave to the lower corner of the text block from moisture. Faint tidemark evident on the text block faces at that corner, but not the interior pages and they turn smoothly. Also some ribbing to the laminate on the spine. Still a solid, affordable copy of this classic.
