"The scarcity of commedia dell'arte plays in English is surprising when one recalls that commedia flourished for as long as two to three hundred years, and that farce is fun. But the dearth is less surprising when one remembers that this semi-improvisational theatre form used stock characters and a narrow range of plots, neither of which lessened its fun but did lessen the need for written texts" - from the Introduction.
