Condition: Very good. First Edition. First printing of this academic novel, only vaguely disguised as fiction - in the tradition of Randall Jarrell's NOTES FROM AN INSTITUTION. Published by Ishmael Reed's publishing company, SECRETS caused something of a literary scandal at the time. Bergé is unfortunately something of a forgott…en figure from the second generation the New York School. Indeed, she left the east coast and became an antique dealer in New Mexico (where she died in 2006) soon after the appearance of this book, and published very little after. But her mimeo CENTER remains an important journal. And this, one of her last works, is oddly uncommon. 8.5'' x 5.5'', Original printed wrappers. 234 pages.
