Pages and covers and jacket are crisp, intact and unmarked. Illustrated. Size: 8vo - over 7.75 - 9.75" tall. 200 pp. Carlo Goldoni - later to be hailed as the Italian Moliere - was born at the height of carnival in eighteenth century Venice. The city states of Italy had reached the nadir of their power and creativity, and, although many supreme artists were yet to emerge, the symptoms of decline and fall were all around. It was an age of depravity and debauchery, and Goldoni was to play as falmboyant a part in it as any of his compatriots. But at the same time he revolutionized the Italian theotre, transforming it from stylised Commedia dell' Arts of Harlequin to the elequantly Mozartian 'comedy of character'. The people who jostled with Goldoni on the curiously intimatstage of eitheenth century Europe included Vivaldi - the 'red priest' and composer - Voltaire, Rousseau and Princess Adelaide of France (to whom he gave Italian lessons) as well as countless managers, actor and above all actresses - one of whom was the mother of Giacomo Casanova, the most famous libertine of them all. The very essense of the life he and his contemporaries lived has been captured in his plays and in the works of artists such as Longhi, Guardi and Tiepolo, many of whose paintings are reproduced in this book 1st Printing 1st Printing 1st Printing.
