Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. This book records the life of a man who has influenced the course of higher education for African-Americans and Africans from the early twentieth century to the present. He formulated the idea and the organization - the United Negro College Fund. In doing so he…made a place for himself in U.S. and world history by providing education that enabled financially starved private black colleges to survive and serve the youth of the segregated North and South. This book is constructed from a series of recorded interviews with Patterson, many conducted on the eve of his selection for the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. Patterson was frequently consulted on "the Negro question" by presidents from the 1930s through the 1970s, so his perspective is unique on a number of issues that surfaced during these decades. This book explores the complexities of racial segregation in the first half of this century and the absence of significant educational opportunities for black youth in Patterson's day. Despite the strictures imposed on him, and the historical obstacles impeding educational progress for blacks, Patterson's relentless efforts gained him international recognition that has fostered the continuing success of the United Negro College Fund. Illustrated.
