Fine in a near fine dust jacket, with slight fading to the spine panel and small closed tears at the crown. Publisher's original price intact on jacket flap ($5.95). Comes with archival-quality mylar dust jacket protector. A tight, clean copy. Octavo, 266 pages. A novel set in rural Mexico, following the story of a peasant whose life is intertwined with the struggle for survival and dignity amid harsh economic conditions. B. Traven (18821969) was a mysterious German-born novelist best known for "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," adapted into John Huston's 1948 Academy Awardwinning film starring Humphrey Bogart. "The Carreta" is the second volume in his six-part "Jungle Novels," published in the 1930s, and reflects his consistent concern with the exploitation of indigenous Mexicans and the power of collective resistance. The "Jungle Novels" were first published in Germany in the 1930s, with early English editions appearing in the 1930s and 1940s. This Hill & Wang edition is a reissue, representing the first printing of this publisher's edition, not the true first edition in English.
