This entertaining play from the 19th century follows the antics of the recently widowed Doña Rufina who, with her brotherâs help, and with an eye on a desirable match for her daughter, plans to pass themselves off as wealthy in order to secure a rich husband for the daughter. In a series of mishaps and mistaken identities, lies and misunderstandings abound, with the would-be suitorsâ attempts to appear more impressive than they really are, leading to ever greater absurdity. The play is a wry look at the desire to elevate oneself in society through whatever means possible, and the inevitable pratfalls that occur when people try to be something they are not.
