Gutbier's Novum Testamentum Syriace (1664) is among the earliest printed editions of the Syriac New Testament, issued from Hamburg with privilege. Based on codex Ambrosianus and other manuscripts, it reflects the 17th-century effort to recover the Peshitta as a witness to biblical text. The accompanying Lexicon Syriacum appears here in the 1706 Nürnberg edition prepared by Johann Michael Gutbier, expanded and corrected from earlier versions, with spicilegium, critical notes, and catalogues.
