The author examines Sallust's work to uncover the extent to which he adopted Thucydides' narrative techniques, sentence structure, and thematic concerns. By comparing specific passages from both historians, the book demonstrates the profound impact Thucydides had on Sallust's approach to writing history. The author argues that Sallust deliberately emulated Thucydides as a model, incorporating elements of his style and thought into his own work. Through a detailed analysis of linguistic and rhetorical similarities, the book sheds light on the literary relationship between these two influential historians and provides valuable insights into the development of historical writing in the ancient world.
