Not an ex-library copy, this First U.S. Edition is in VG- condition with a little bit of slightly rough surface i…n center of front loose end page from removal of a bookplate, some foxing on the paste down and loose end pages front and back, and some slight yellowing of text's pages over time. From Wm. Campbell Steere's Foreword, "The stunning internationally recognized species and varieties chosen for this most colorful and superbly crafted book give a broad and beautiful overview of this fascinating flower. The dictionary entries are truly international and will give the reader an excellent and up-to-date[for that time] basis for the selection of the most suitable species, hybrids, and cultivars for his purpose. . Also the actual techniques of planting, fertilizing, propagation by budding and cuttings, pruning, etc., as described here, are universally acceptable". With an Introduction running 34 pages(discussing the techniques mentioned above), 500 full color plates(the result of Ernest Crowson's meticulous work) of Species and direct hybrids, alphabetized, and finally the Dictionary listings themselves. Encompassing 191 pages, with each left-hand page of Dictionary showing/repeating a complete table of "Abbreviations and Symbols used in the text". Thank you, and ENJOY this one.
