(See seller's photo) The clipped dust jacket is in very good condition, with a single tear, mild chipping at the top and base of spine, and minor sunning to the spine and joints of the back panel. This book is composed of two parts: an essay "On Fairy Tales" and a short story "Leaf by Niggle". Of the former, the dust jacket states "Mr. Tolkien rescues the fairy tale from the academic theorists on the one hand and the sentimentalists on the other." In his introductory note, Tolkien comments that these two essays "…were written in the same period (1938-39), when The Lord of the Rings was beginning to unroll itself and to unfold prospects of labour and exploration in yet unknown country as daunting to me as to the hobbits." Besides his Lord of the Rings, Tolkien is also admired in academic circles for his 1936 essay "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" that was crucial to the renewed appreciation of that epic as a work of literature.
