'This book, beginning with a brief history of the labour movement in Spain, examines the introduction of American style collective bargaining contracts into a system of industrial relations derived from the fascist origins of the Franco regime. Undertaken as part of a programme to liberalise' Spanish political institutions, the introduction of methods of wage determination developed in the pluralistic societies had important consequences for the official and unofficial labour movements alike. These two aspects of the industrial relations system merged in the operation of the factory committees as jurados de empresa, also introduced by law (for factories having more than a certain number of employees) at an earlier period. The analysis of this body is set in a comparative theoretical context, and illustrated with a case study made by the author while working in a Spanish factory. This study of collective bargaining in a single firm is followed by a more general treatment of the development of collective bargaining and of its opposite-compulsory arbitration. It is in the latter phenomenon that the author sees the development of a counter-strategy to collective bargaining for a large and important part of the work-force. In this book the author presents an analysis of labour organisations and industrial conflict in Spain during the period of partial liberalisation (1961-68) and relaxation of political controls; and in providing the reader with the first case study of a Spanish firm, he makes a unique contribution to the study of labour organisation.'
