This book presents a detailed account of a research expedition through the least-known regions of New Zealand, undertaken by an unnamed missionary explorer in the 1840s. His personal journal combines natural history discoveries, observations on the indigenous people, and a fascinating narrative of the author's travels and experiences, providing a unique insight into a particular time and place in the history of the islands. Most notably, he describes his discovery of many new plant species, including a large and beautiful fern named in honor of Lady Franklin, wife of the governor of Tasmania. The author's account and the history of the early European explorers of New Zealand provides important sociohistorical context to the tumultuous period in which the islands entered into greater contact with the West. This book will interest scholars of New Zealand natural history, as well as anyone fascinated by the complex interplay of scientific discovery and indigenous culture in the 19th century.
