The academy played a pivotal role in the development of French art, providing a space for students to study the works of the great masters and to hone their own skills. The book draws on a rich collection of letters, reports, and other documents to provide a vivid account of the academy's history, from its early days to its transformation in the late 18th century. The author explores the challenges faced by the academy's directors, the evolving nature of artistic education, and the impact of the academy on the careers of some of France's most celebrated artists.
