This book delves into the papacy of Innocent XI (1676-1689), specifically his intricate relationship with Spain's King Charles II and the court during the intricacies of the Franco-Spanish War. The author's meticulous analysis of diplomatic correspondence reveals the Pope's cunning strategy of playing both sides against each other, publicly expressing benevolence towards France while covertly favoring Spain in vital matters. The text offers a nuanced examination of Innocent XI's motivations, portraying him as a complex figure torn between his papal neutrality and his personal leanings.
