The Methodist Episcopal Church is a major branch of Methodism that was prominent in the United States in the 19th century, and its conferences were significant events for Methodist ministers and laity. The book outlines the business conducted at the conference, including appointments made, transfers of ministers, financial matters, and the examination of candidates for ordination, and provides a general overview of the conference's proceedings. It also reflects on the Methodist Episcopal Church's role in social issues of the time, such as the temperance movement and women's suffrage.
