The author explores the ways in which Church leaders used the concept of covenants and understandings among Christians as tools to maintain their authority and shut down dissenters. The book argues that the idea of covenants as a strict, binding contract that governs God's relations with the faithful has been used to restrict reform and maintain the existing structures of privilege and power in the Church. The author claims that understanding the history of this concept is essential to fully appreciating the challenges facing the Church today.
