It focuses on a particularly formative period in the history of this genre, examining one of the first periodicals to allow reader participation: 'The British Apollo'. The author delves deep into the content of this publication, a series of volumes which were extremely popular in their own day and which are now of such extreme rarity that a re-issue of it would be equivalent to a new publication. They shed fascinating light on attitudes prevalent in the early 18th century, in areas including science, medicine, etiquette and fashion. The author provides a critical analysis of the replies given to the questions posed to the magazine, and speculates as to the identities of the authors of some of these responses. This book illuminates a fascinating moment in the history of literature, offering valuable insights into the intellectual, cultural, and social milieu of the early 18th century.
