This book of hymns was written by the author to express the glories of redemption through Jesus Christ, drawing heavily on the author's belief in the tenets of Calvinistic Christianity. The author believed that salvation is available for all those who have faith in Jesus, that the Bible is the ultimate source of authority, and that those who put their faith in Jesus are predestined for eternal life; these central themes being grounded in their understanding of the absolute sovereignty of God and the radical depravity of humankind. The author's hope was that the hymns would be used by the faithful to praise God and to encourage one another in their Christian walk. The insight of these hymns is that the love of Christ conquers all, despite the ever-present threat of sin and that, through hymns, we may better praise God.
