Protestants believed the Bible was free of error in matters of faith and practice. They argued that anyone could access the Bible to discover religious truths. On the other hand, the Catholic Church held that Catholics could not read the Bible without the interpretation provided by their priests. The author uses the writings of Cardinal Bellarmine to demonstrate the Catholic Church's position. Bellarmine argued that many aspects of the Bible were intentionally obscure and could only be understood through the interpretations provided by the Church. This book's exploration of the historical and theological differences between Catholics and Protestants regarding the accessibility of the Bible is a valuable resource for those interested in the history of Christianity.
