In the early 1900s, New York had over a hundred savings banks, their trustees drawn from the ranks of the city's leading businessmen, philanthropists, and politicians. For these men, many of the banks became personal fiefdoms where they could enrich themselves and their friends, often at the expense of depositors. The author draws on recently discovered New York State Banking Department reports to shine a light on the rampant speculation and cronyism that reigned in these hallowed halls. This account of greed and deception is a reminder that the banking controversies of the twentieth century have their roots in a bygone era.
