First published before the widespread use of steel in lookout tower construction, this book represents a record of the Forest Service's shift from steel to timber towers. It contains design plans for steel and timber towers of various heights, as well as a wealth of information on tower construction prior to 1939. The author also delves into the study of fire behavior in different fuel types, including methodology for measuring and recording fire behavior. This book is of particular value to wildfire professionals due to the inclusion of in-depth analysis of various chemical and water treatments designed to suppress or prevent fires, incorporating data from the 1937 and 1938 fire seasons. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
