Despite high infant mortality rates, many survived to face a life of hardship and struggle. The author masterfully interweaves statistics, case studies, and historical context to trace the governmental, social, and economic forces that perpetuated the difficulties of these children. The author provides insight into the lives and challenges of unmarried mothers, using the best data available to the author in 1921. Through a meticulous examination of public records and social agency archives, the author exposes the fundamental problems of illegitimacy and the urgent need for reform. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
