This book examines the evolution of the position of praefecti fabrum, from its origins in Romeâs Republican era to its later incarnations during the reign of emperors. The praefecti fabrum fulfilled multiple roles as adjutants, overseers, or administrative officials for high-ranking statesmen and generals, and the author argues that the military interpretation of this position, prevalent in some contemporary scholarship, is incorrect. Utilizing both literary and epigraphic sources, the author examines the praefecti fabrumâs diverse functions and challenges traditional assumptions about its military significance. This detailed analysis, which includes a comprehensive appendix of praefecti fabrum inscriptions, ultimately reveals the multifaceted nature of this office within the broader context of Roman administration and military practices.
