This book is not designed to be a history, yet it is impossible to write about the rise and fall of the London season without considering the ways in which the aristocracy have adjusted themselves not only to the court and the Crown but also to influences from other countries, particularly France and the United States of America, from one Elizabethan era to another. This book has a serious intent, but it is also an entertainment. The author has caught and analysed the manners of society during four centuries. There is also the author's own oputrageous experiences during her two seasons. It is doubtful whether the London season now has any significance, although, as the author says 'snobbery is an intrinsic to the British as it ever was when Elizabeth I was rampant, or James sold titles in return for gold'. But its history is both fascinating and salutary.
