Hardcover. Condition: Good. Good (Protective cover). Cover is in excellent condition, save for minor rubbing. DJ is unclipped and in good condition, save for edge wear to upper edges and minor rubbing/yellowing with age. Text is otherwise tight in binding. Text is clean and free of blemishes throughout, save for penned ownership… on FEP and heavy penciled margin notations and underlining of passages. No other markings or indications of note. Since this very good book has the heavy underlining we would say the condition is good. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. 1. An association copy: laid is a "compliments of Houghton Mifflin Company" card signed by its editor-in-chief Paul Brooks, and with the ownership signature of Houghton Mifflin editor Haven H. Spencer at the top of the front free endpaper. Spencer was a senior sc…ience editor for Houghton Mifflin and developed and managed the house's first college science department. Also laid in is a small promotional brochure/order form for the book featuring blurbs by William O Douglas, Robert Cushman Murphy, and John Kieran. Published just eight years after Carson's book, this book is part biography and account of the making of Silent Spring, part follow-up to that book with the latest update on "how the pesticide question stands today." Frank Graham, Jr., (see his NYT obit) was a prolific environmental writer and a field editor for Audubon magazine. Brooks was Rachel Carson's publisher and editor, and in fact he suggested the title Silent Spring. He was also an accomplished naturalist writer and winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing for Roadless Area. Green cloth with silver gilt lettering. Very good with offsetting from now missing laid-in materials on the front free endpaper, title page (lightly), and dedication page; also one bump to rear top board edge near spine. In a very good jacket with edge wear and rubbing to corner and spine ends; one quarter-inch tear at top edge of front panel. A nice publishing association with rare ephemera. Signed.
