An experienced lecturer and instructor at the University of California Santa Cruz Extension, he has delivered signal processing seminars and training courses for Besser Associates throughout the US and Europe to companies such as Motorola, Lockheed-Martin, Texas Instruments, Nokia, Honeywell, Qualcomm, National Semiconductor, Northrop Grumman, Sandia National Laboratories, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, etc. He has written numerous articles on DSP topics, and authored the top selling DSP book Understanding Digital Signal Processing, now in its third edition. Lyons is the primary contributor to, and Editor of, the book Streamlining Digital Signal Processing: A Tricks of the Trade Guidebook. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing magazine, where he created and edits the "DSP Tips & Tricks" column; and a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honor society. He received the 2007 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Column Award and the IEEE Signal Processing Society's 2012 Education Award.
