Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. First Printing. [8], 437, [3] pages. Illustrations. Appendices. Tables, Chronology. Index. two 1/8" tears at top edge of DJ spine. Signed by the author. Ed Linn, an author and magazine writer wrote widely on the Yankees and the Red Sox. He wrote for the… Voice of America in Washington before turning to freelance work. Mr. Linn covered the trial of Jack Ruby for The Saturday Evening Post and worked with the infamous bank robber Willie Sutton on his autobiography, ''Where the Money Was'' (1976). But he was best known for sportswriting, having been a contributing editor to Sport magazine and co-author with Mr. Veeck. Mr. Linn also collaborated with Sandy Koufax, Bob Cousy and Leo Durocher on their autobiographies. He wrote ''Inside the Yankees: The Championship Season'' (1978), ''Steinbrenner's Yankees'' (1982) and ''The Great Rivalry'' (1991), an account of the Yankee-Red Sox duels. The last of his 17 books was the biography ''Hitter: The Life and Turmoils of Ted Williams'' (1993). Derived from a Kirkus review: An unusually thoughtful sports bio that puts the accomplishments and contentious nature of Ted Williams into clear perspective. Linn offers a sympathetic, albeit unsparing, portrait of the last major leaguer to hit over .400 (.406 in 1941). Drawing on personal observations, plus archival sources and interviews with contemporaries, he provides a detailed account of Williams's Hall of Fame career with the Boston Red Sox, which ran from 1939 through 1960. Linn focuses on the batting feats that brought his subject acclaim and his largely adversarial relationship with the press. Covered as well are the disabling injuries and two tours of active duty as a Marine Corps flier that kept Williams from scaling even greater heights in the record books. What Linn does best is to analyze statistical data to document the productive value that Williams added to his team season after season. An appraisal that gives human dimensions to a baseball legend and his fabled achievements.
