Hardcover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. 'Then came a child trotting to school with his little backpack. He trotted on all fours, neatly, his hands in leather mitts or boots that protected them from the pavement; he was pale, with small eyes, and a snout, but he was adorable.'--from Changing PlanesThe misery of waiting for a connecting flight at an airport leads to the accidental discovery of alighting on other planes--not airplanes but planes of existence. Ursula Le Guin's deadpan premise frames a series of travel accounts by the tourist-narrator who describes bizarre societies and cultures that sometimes mirror our own, and sometimes open puzzling doors into the alien. Winner of the PEN/Malamud for Short Stories.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near fine. First edition. A nice Northwest association copy, inscribed on the title page: "To Carolyn [Kizer], my lioness, with love from Ursula, November '03." Born in Spokane, Kizer was a fierce feminist poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985 for Yin. She studied with Theodore Roethke at the University of Washington and ultimately ending up in Sonoma, CA. Le Guin and Kizer were longtime friends (see for example this discussion of their relationship). Le Guin called Kizer's poetry "intensely, splendidly oral, wanting to be read aloud, best of all to be read or roared by the lion herself." Changing Planes is a collection of linked stories, each describing a different world visited from an airport by the same main character, Sita Dulip. A nice twist on contemporary travel. It won the Locus Award for Best Collection in 2004. A fine book in a near fine jacket. Kizer has noted the mention of "a poet" on the rear free endpaper with a matching marginal line on page 106.
