Emigrato nel 1933, visse in vari paesi (fu anche in Palestina) e nel 1948 si stabilì nella Germania orientale, diventando una delle figure culturali di primo piano della RDT e ricoprendo importanti incarichi politico-culturali. Vasta e influente è stata anche la sua saggistica, che comprende alcuni notevoli interventi sui temi dell'ebraismo. Centrale nell'opera di Zweig è la consapevolezza del fallimento della tradizione umanistica, travolta dal sanguinario cinismo industrial-tecnologico di nuove caste.
