Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Qin Yinzhi (illustrator). First edition thus. Long River Press was founded in San Francisco in 2002 with the mission to "publish books promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese history, society and culture". This is one of several children's picture books, published in series in 2005 in both English and Chinese editions. This English edition is translated by Wu Yong. (I use the Chinese format for names - family name first.) The author, Zhang Zhilu is a prolific Chinese writer and the illustrator is a renown Chinese artist. She illustrated a great picture book called "Bad Dog, Macy", and a recent book, "Once Upon a Time There Was an Elephant". Anyway, back to this book; it's a strange tale of two crickets, one gets swallowed whole by an Ox while its friend helps and encourages it to escape via a sneeze. This copy is near fine, with some indentation on the rear board and just a hint of yellowing to edges.
Hardcover. Condition: New. Little Auspicious is growing up in Beijing in the 1940s, an era of immense social change. In telling the boy's story, from the fear that troops from the People's Liberation Army will occupy his home to encounters with spies and the Kuomintang, this illustrated narrative sheds light on life in the city before liberation. Age 11+.
