First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First American Edition. Decent quality Indian publication, translated and published for NASA from the 1971 Soviet original, titled "Znakom'tes', Samolet I Raketa". Apparently intended for technically minded teenagers. Covers the history and technology of aircraft, principles of flight, engines, equipment, instrumentation and navigation, 'cybernetics', final chapter on space flight. All written in a somewhat florid and hyperbolic style, redolant of cold-war hubris: "Young man! Ours is the age of intent study of the sky, as was said by the great scientist and thinker K.E. Tsiolkovskii. If you carry deep in your heart the ardent, cherished dreams of aviation, of cosmonautics, if the sky insistently calls you, then fling open the doors of the aviation school.". Full blue cloth, gilt titling. Light general wear, jacket edgeworn and lightly chipped, back panel rubbed with a short closed tear. Text clean; viii, 271 pages, b/w figures. Size: Large Octavo.
