Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. How are Mongolia's resilient cashmere herders overcoming harsh conditions and economic challenges to thrive? In the Herder's Boots explores the struggles of Mongolia's nomadic cashmere goat herders to survive on the arid Alta Plateau of the Gobi Desert. They face harsh conditions: frigid winters, scorching summers, and scarce grazing. Despite producing the world's finest cashmere, they're trapped in a market dominated by China, earning a mere fraction of its value. Stephen Parliament, contracted by USAID and Mercy Corps, helped organize herders into cooperatives. This enabled them to sell directly to indigenous Mongolian processors in Uluunbaatar, Mongolia's capital city, rather than Chinese traders, improve their herds, and access better veterinary care. By working with Mongolian colleagues, he fostered sustainable practices and empowered herders to thrive, even amidst powerful neighbours.Ideal for students, educators, and scholars interested in Asian Studies. It is also essential for readers concerned with the challenges of globalization and economics. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), buildings and construction together account for 30% of global final energy consumption and 27% of total energy sector emissions. The building sector has been making efforts to reduce carbon emissions for many years. However, there is still a long way to go to meet the Net-Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario. Given the large amount of new construction every year, it is necessary to significantly increase the proportion of green buildings, including new buildings with green design and construction and the green retrofitting of existing buildings. The green building concept has been around for decades, aiming to reduce the environmental impacts of buildings over their life cycle. Different green building assessment tools have been developed, such as LEED, BREEAM, BEAM Plus, etc., and many buildings have been labelled as green buildings worldwide. However, the number of green buildings is still a small percentage of the existing building stocks. Therefore, it has become necessary to further promote the green concept in future building design and construction by involving different stakeholders. Moreover, the green retrofitting of existing buildings will provide important contributions to achieve net-zero emission goals. New technologies and materials will also bring disruptions for the future development of green buildings. Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This textbook is intended to be used by the senior engineering undergraduate and the graduate student. Nowadays, the finite element method has become one of the most widely used techniques in all the engineering fields, including aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, etc. To unveil the FE technique, the textbook provides a detailed description of the finite element method, starting from the most important basic theoretical basis, e.g., the Galerkin method, the variational principle, followed by the detailed description of the various types of finite elements, including the bar, the beam, the triangular, the rectangular, the 3D elements. The primary aim of the textbook is to provide a comprehensive description of the FE solutions using different types of elements. Therefore, the properties of different elements and the solution discrepancies caused by using different elements are highlighted in the book. Thus, the textbook is very helpful for engineers to understand the behaviours of different types of elements. Additionally, the textbook can help the students and engineers write FE codes based on the theories presented in the book. Furthermore, the textbook can serve as the basis for some advanced computational mechanics courses, such as the nonlinear finite element method.

The authors in this volume believe that long-term, profound, and sometimes tumultuous changes in the last five hundred years of the history of China have been no less geographical than social, political, or economic. From the dialectics of local-empire relations to the imperial states persistent array of projects for absorbing and transforming ethnic regions on the margins of empire; from the tripling of imperial territories in the Qing to the disputes over the identity of the former "outer zones" in the early Republican era; and from the universalistic imagination of "all-under-heaven" to the fraught processes of re-drawing a new set of nation-state boundaries in the twentieth century, the study of the dynamics of geography, broadly conceived, promises to provide insight into the contested development of the geographical entity which we, today, call 'China.' About the Author: Yongtao Du is Assistant Professor of Asian History at Oklahoma State University. His research interests include translocal practices in late imperial China and literati geographic consciousness in China during the Song through the Qing. He received a PhD in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Jeff Kyong-McClain is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His research explores the place of archeology in nation-building in modern China, Sino-Western interaction in China's borderlands, and urban transformations during the Republican era. He received his PhD in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009.
