Geheftet. Condition: Gut. S. 111-115 + 1 Tafel. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Berieben. - In conjunction with the excavations at Petra during the seasons 1959 and 1960 conducted by the British School in Jerusalem, under the direction of P. J. Parr, a study was made of the Arched Gate leading from the Colonnaded Street to the Sanctuary Area. The drawings reproduced have been restricted to elements the position of which is reasonably apparent. The other recorded fragments whose position can only be determined (if at all) through exhaustive analysis in reconstruction remain to be dealt with when such a proceeding becomes more feasible. Further, in establishing the setting of the detail, some notice is given of the changes in the overall picture of the monument which have accrued aduring the passage of a decade. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The wealth of excavation of ancient buildings in the past 50 years and the resulting flood of publications has created a demand for a survey of building practice in antiquity. This two-volume work deals with the techniques of setting together the fabric of ancient buildings: the manual and mechanical operations involved; the materials, tools and equipment used. "Ancient" here means from very first beginnings (origins) to the end of Late Antiquity (i.e. about 600 A.D.); as manifested geographically in the Old World of Europe and the Middle East (not sub-Saharan Africa, Further Asia, the Far East or New World). Building (the product and the process) is limited to architectural building and looks at the technology of civil engineering only where it introduces novelties. Technology here means the system of techniques used in the process of building construction rather than the science or theory of building. The 10 chapters of this first volume are intended to give a general perspective of animal building in the light of evolutionary biology, then of building in the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Levanto-Aegean, Achaemenid, Greek, Roman, Late Antique -Early Christian / Byzantine / Sassanian contexts (with a weighting towards the lesser known prehistoric beginnings and late antique end). The second volume will focus on the technical details: materials of construction, structural systems, principles of construction and forms of construction. (Publisher).

The building incorporated the Old Amiri Palace, built by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani had built it at the end of the 19th Century. He had used it as a family residence and seat of power until he moved into the abandoned Ottoman fort, Qalat al-Askar, in 1923. The author George Roy Haslam Wright (1924-2014), an architect and archaeologist at the Institut Francais d'Archeologie in Beirut, advised on its restoration, aiming "to conserve and recreate as far as possible the spirit of the original construction". His report includes a history and description of the building and its restoration, with a map showing its development over time, incorporating Turkish, Mongol, Persian, Anglo-Indian, and English inspired elements. Photos show aerial views, details, the decay prior to restoration, and post-restoration.
