Pages clean and bright. Green text block intact. Dust jacket has some wear to spine top and to bottom lower right. Tight binding. A very nice copy. First edition, first printing with priced dust jacket. Also has the "Reward" card that was issued with this book that is usually missing. A highly detailed Utopian fantasy that Wright labored over for years, only to have it posthumously published. The introduction is by Leonard Bacon, the afterward by Sylvia Wright, the author's editor & daughter. Generally considered a "utopian" novel, Islandia describes the journey and adventures of John Lang, a once very proper American college student. Austin Tappan Wright did not just write a novel of adventures in a strange land and civilization; Islandia is a country with a history, towns, cities and streets, its own geography, language, people (and demographics), politics, law and customs, even its virtues and faults.

Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. After his untimely death in 1931 at age 48 in a New Mexico auto accident, legal scholar and attorney Austin Tappan Wright left behind lengthy manuscripts of this novel and related writings. The novel was organized and edited by his widow Margaret and daughter Sylvia and eventually published in 1942 by Farrar & Rinehart. --- This is the story of an intricately-organized society in the imagined nation of Islandia, situated somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. The people of Islandia, per Wright, had established a rule (among many others), limiting outside visitors to one hundred at any one time, so as to preserve the unique ethos of the country. A life-long project for the author, he also concocted an elaborate history of Islandia, with genealogies, glossary of the Islandian language and other well-organized data. This classic, often compared to J. R. R. Tolkien's writings, is an entry in publishers' 'Utopian Literature' series. Includes a fold-out 30 cm. x 24 cm. map of Islandia by Robert Graves, and an introduction by Leonard Bacon. --- A 1971 reprint edition of the original 1942 issuance. In full mustard cloth-covered boards with simple cover and spine titling in brown. Volume lacks a dust jacket, likely as issued. --- A well-preserved, tightly-bound and unmarked copy, though with retailer's sticker to front paste-down, dampstains to last few leaves and small creases to corners of some leaves. (NOTE: Due to the weight of this item, extra shipping charges may be requested.); Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; viii, [2], 1013, [5] pages.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good Plus. No Jacket. First Edition. A great utopian fantasy novel, comparable in conception and complexity to Tolkien's "Middle Earth." Wright, a law professor and legal scholar, created "Islandia" over many years in his free time after his academic duties at various U.S. universities, including Stanford, Michigan and Pennsylvania. When he died in an auto accident in New Mexico in 1931, he left a manuscript of over 2,300 pages plus appendices on a country called "Islandia," The appendices and a book-length general history of Islandia described language, culture, customs, population, historic peerage, and geography. His wife and daughter edited the work and trimmed it to the 1,013 pages published in the first edition in 1942. This copy is an early printing of the 1942 First Edition, lacking the publisher's colophon on the copyright page signifying the first printing. The original light tan buckram-covered boards are age and sun-darkened, particulary on the spine and along the edges, with some minor fraying of the cloth at the corners. The previous owner's bookplate is pasted to the front free endpage, concealing part of the Robert Graves-designed map on the pastedown. The front endpapers and first two dozen pages of text show a mild lower corner crease on the thin, WWII-era pages; text edges are lightly soiled and stained. Sorry, the dustjacket is missing. All that said, the book remains the 1942 first edition, complete and with the Leonard Bacon introduction. It is basically clean and unmarked, still tight and square. A great novel at a decent price.
