8vo, pp xii, 440, half title, contemporary half calf, spine gilt with raised bands, spine worn at ends, cracked at joints which are reinforced internally, the corners worn, internally clean and sound, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY 'TO LADY JERVIS FROM THE AUTHOR.' and with the bookplate of Martha H G Jervis. Jervis being Wolferstan's maiden name this is clearly a family presenttaion. Elizabeth Jervis was born in 1763 and published a successul three decker in 1796. She subsequently married, publishing nothing further until this collective volume of poetry after her husband's death in 1820, with simple designation 'E P Wolferstan' on the title page; it would set her off on a series of poetry collections, the last in 1842, three years before her death. An edition of the Enchanted Flute dated 1822 and with just 140 pages is listed in Jackson [UC, verified], but we have not been able to trace this edition which is not listed in COPAC. Her long poem 'Three Years after Marriage' included in this collection is, perhaps, partly autobiographical and, if so, salutary.

Three works in one volume, 8vo, pp. [3]-32 (i.e without the half title); 23; 23; nicely bound in contemporary full calf, gilt spine, black morocco label. Apparently the second edition, but possibly a reissue of the original 1829 edition, also printed at Lichfield by T.G. Lomax. An edition of 1833 is designated the second edition, so this seems the most likely explanation. Elizabeth Wolferstan must be from the family that owned Statfold Hall, near Tamworth - the family into which she married numbered amongst them the notable female book collector, Frances Wolfreston (d. 1677). Jackson, Romantic Poetry by Women, p. 380 4(b); Jackson, Annals, p. 552 (this edition). Rare: one copy of the 1829 edition at the Bodleian, and one of the 1833 edition at the British Library, which also holds the only copy in Copac of this edition. Provenance. Early inscription of Gertrude L. Everett, Chase Side House, Enfield (Middlesex). In the early 19th century this house belonged to James Farrer Steadman, who died in 1834. Anne, his widow, then married William Everett, who died in 1843; she continued living at the house until her death in 1865, at the age of 80. Gertrude Everett was presumably William's daughter from a prior marriage.
