Small chip to front bottom corner. Both front and rear joints are cracking. Some small spots visible on rear board. Book plate on inside front cover. Binding solid and true. Pages clean and clear. Fore edge rough cut. Delicate silver pen design work to every page. Outer slipcase is quarter bound in leather and brown fabric. Leather shows occasional minor wear marks. There is a mark from a previous price sticker on back bottom corner. 5 raised bands and gilt lettering on outer slipcase spine. Unpaginated.

Private bookplate of Herbert H. Johnson on the front pastedown. Minor chipping to the spine and corners of the dust jacket, else a near fine copy.Printed in Granjon type with title page having a cat in silver and silver borders. The typography is by the notable American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), who "was appreciated in his lifetime. In addition to several honorary degrees, in 1948 he was awarded a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for distinction in the graphic arts. Over decades of accomplishment in which he designed approximately 500 books. Rogers literally defined the profession of book designing in the United States" (ANB). Francis Meynell stated that Rogers was."the greatest artificer of the book who ever lived" boards, paper spine label, dust jacket.
