Add to basketHardcover. 2nd thus. 93 p.; 14 cm. The title of this edition forms the running head above the text in the Dublin review article [1st thus in 1894] [Wiseman's article appeared in Dublin review, v.7 (no.13) p.139-180, August 1839] Here, on p.36, Wiseman compares Anglicans to the Donatists: `St. Augustine has a golden sentence on this subject, which should be an axiom in theology: "Quapropter securus judicat orbis terrarum, bonos non esse qui se dividunt ab orbe terrarum, in quacumque parte orbis terrarum."' Note: "Wherefore, the entire world judges with security, that they are not good, who separate themselves from the entire world, in whatever part of the entire world." -- In his Apologia pro vita sua (1864, p. 212-13, abridged), John Henry Newman recalls his reaction: `For a mere sentence, the words of St. Augustine, struck me with a power which I never had felt from any words before. By these great words of the ancient Father, the theory of the Via Media was absolutely pulverized. I became excited at the view thus opened upon me. After a while, I got calm, and at length the vivid impression upon my imagination faded away. What I thought about it on reflection, I will attempt to describe presently. I had to determine its logical value, and its bearing upon my duty. Meanwhile, so far as this was certain, -- I had seen the shadow of a hand upon the wall. It was clear that I had a good deal to learn on the question of the Churches, and that perhaps some new light was coming upon me. He who has seen a ghost, cannot be as if he had never seen it. The heaven had opened and closed again. The thought for the moment had been, "The Church of Rome will be found right after all;" and then it had vanished. My old convictions remained as before.' Fair spotted mauve cloth, gilt top. Backstrip torn away.

Four pages. 16mo bifoliate. In poor condition: grubby, creased, stained and worn. Traces of previous mounting along top of two central pages, and of stub along one edge, removal of which has caused a small hole (not affecting text). A letter to the publisher of his 'Essays on various subjects' (3 vols, 1853): ' sermons, I have "50 Heaven" "Means of salvation" being "49." | Either therefore our lists do not agree, or one of us has made a mistake. Please therefore to look back at my last letter, and see if I did not say I wished to have "44 Goodness of God | 50 Heaven | 51 Conclusion." | Now what is to be done with my 49 or your 50 - "Means of salvation? Either enlarge the volume by introducing 48 Salvation before The means of S. & 44 Goodness of God, or keep by 48 & 49. I have no objection to increase the vol. if you like: only I wish to get it out - so as to get Vol 3 forward. | Please let me have a line, & in the meantime I return proof. | Yours very sincerely &c | N. Card. Wiseman'.

12mo: 1 p. On the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, with the address, with postmark, on the reverse of the second. On brittle, aged paper. The letter has been neatly folded three times, and there are a few closed tears along the crease lines, including one through the initial 'N' of the signature. Wiseman thanks Castermann for the copy he has sent of 'votre nouvelle édition en Français de "Fabiola". Not only is the 'execution typographique de l'ouvrage' deserving of his praise, but also the translation, which leaves nothing to be desired.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient is the publisher Henry Blackett (1825-1871) of the leading London firm Hurst & Blackett, and the meeting was evidently to discuss terms, possibly for Wiseman's 'Recollections of the Last Four Popes', which the firm published in 1859. 1p, 8vo. Laid down on another leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged, on thin paper, and with discoloration from the glue used in laying the item down. Small red armorial letterhead. The note reads: 'Cardinal Wiseman will be happy to meet Mr Blackett, if convenient, on Tuesday (tomorrow) about 12, at 8 York Place / Leyton June 29. 1857'. Hurst and Blackett would also publish Wiseman's lecture 'Points of Contact between Science and Art' (1863), and his book on William Shakespeare (1865).
