Condition: Fair. 1838. No Edition Remarks. 92 pages. No dust jacket. Half bound green leather with green cloth covered boards with gilt. Black and white illustration plates throughout with tissue guards and similar frontispiece. Marbled textblock edges. Pages with some tanning and foxing, particularly to tissue guards. Previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Some cracking to hinges and gutters with exposed netting. A detached page with associated edge staining. Binding remains firm. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners, crushing and fraying to spine ends and rubbing and staining all over. Gilt lettering is slightly dulled.

A good tightly bound copy, lightly rubbed to the extremities and just starting at the head of the upper joint. The volume without markings but with scattered foxing, some tissue guarded plates with a marginal water stain, some more prominently so. Part Two of the work has a vignette title in addition to the plates. clviii, 103 + 72pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. David Octavius Hill (illustrator). 2 Volumes, half bound black leather on marbled boards, Front hinge on each volume has detached. All gilt edges, Gilt decoration to spine with titles and date on gilt. Vol. 1- has 47 plates all present Vol 2- has 35 plates listed of which 34 are present. the one missing is the first listed as page "vii Professor Wilson's Essay on the Life and Writings of Burns". Appears to have been included in prelims which are present but are blank pages. Nice more or less complete set in need of strengthening to hinges. Interesting as so far as illustrations by David Octavius Hill the prominent artist and early photographer.

The plates facing page vii and page twenty of Volume II are missing. Collated. Volume I is complete. In half calf bindings and marbled boards. Externally, sound. The rear board to Volume II is detached, and the front board is working loose, with the front hinge held by cords only, a crack to the front joint and wear to the spine. Volume II is also missing one of the spine labels and half of the second spine label. There is rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities of both volumes. The boards are also quite worn. The hinges of Volume I are strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some light spotting. Good Only. book.

Very light foxing throughout the rest of the book and with faint, extremely light marginal waterstaining ; Extremely rare. INSCRIBED by two of the Burns brothers in ink, on blank page facing frontispiece, dated March 7, 1853, Cheltenham, reading: "To Mrs. James Platt with the Kind wishes of two of the Bard's Sons". Included is a note of provenance from when the book was handed to a friend 99 years after the first presentation. - "The Landscapes from paintings made expressively for the work, by D. O. Hill, Esq. R. S. A. ". 1/2 leather binding with gilt spine lettering and decoration. Five raised bands. All edges gilt; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 105 pages.

Condition: VG. Glasgow 1841 Blackie and Son. 4to., 105pp., 46 steel engraved plates; clviii ("The Genius and Character of Burns") ,72p. 35 steel engraved plates. 3/4 red leather. All edges gilt. Text VG+, plates VG to near Fine - very little foxing on text or plates. Front board retached with paper tape. Good. boards rubbed and worn, rear hinge just beginning to give.
