Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Frazetta (illustrator). This is the 1968 Lancer Large Type (Easy Eye) Reprint of "The Reign of Wizardry" by Jack Williamson. Originally published in 1940, Williamson completely reinvented Mediterranean history and mythology - the ancient world of Crete, Minos, and Greece, into something never imagined by historians of the ancient past -- "The magic of the Dark One enslaved the world -- Theseus alone stood against it!" From the cover blurb: "THE WALLS OF SORCERY -- Before the glory of Greece, Crete ruled the known world - and kept it enslaved by black magic. The evil of Minos held sway, protected by the three unconquerable walls . First there is the fleet, that they call the wooden wall. Then there is a giant of living brass - he is the second wall. Then there is another barrier about the power of Minos: THE WALL OF WIZARDRY ! Theseus, the tall Achean - the man they called Captain Firebrand - vowed to scale and destroy all three, and to rid the world of the evil yoke of Minos. But Minos had other defenses besides the three walls - and many ways to attack, as well." This is classic Sword and Sorcery! His first published story went to the pulp magazine ?Amazing Stories? when he was 20 years old. By the 1930s he was an established genre author, and the teenaged Isaac Asimov was thrilled to receive a postcard from Williamson, whom he had idolized, which congratulated him on his first published story and offered "welcome to the ranks". Williamson remained a regular contributor to the pulp magazines trough the years. Williamson continued to write as a nonagenarian and won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards during the last decade of his life, by far the oldest writer to win those awards.A very nice First Edition copy in the scarce DJ.
