Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Original green cloth binding, with water damage on bottom half of both boards and nearby pages. Spine has gilt lettering, and blind embossing to boards and spine. Frontispiece of William Robertson, and title page illustration of Atahualpa, Inca of Peru, seized by Pizarro. Contains a fold-out map of the West India Islands, including Central America and the northern coast of South America. A second fold-out map shows New Spain, including Mexico and what is now the southern United States. Some pages hand-cut, with minor tearing, and a few pages uncut. Contents include Columbus's expedition to the East Indies, descriptions of the civilizations of the West India islands, political and economic interests of Spain, an account of the actions of Bartolomé de Las Casas, the history of the conquests and settlements made by Cortes, the history of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro, a view of the institutions and manners the Mexicans and Peruvians prior to, and at the time of conquest, the government of the Spanish colonies, the depopulation of Spanish America, and more. The omitted books in this abridged version are an account of the settlement of Virginia and New England, which the preface notes are not truly connected with this work, and are fragments of a larger work Robertson planned, but never finished, on British America. Contains a memoir of the author entitled the Life and Writings of William Robertson, by Dugald Stewart, F.R.S.E. Hardcover, acceptable condition with dampstain. 551 pages, 24mo.

Contemporary brown tree calf, gilt bands on spine, titles on spine in blind stamped. Original white eps. Covers : possibly, gilt from titles on spine has come off ?, 5cm split top edge of spine, corners& top/bottom of spine rubbedfront covered leather split but still attached. Contents : foxing to title, heavy foxing to final 3 pages else clean, tight & unfoxed. Maps : slight browning, 1st map neat original folds but final section creasedwith browning on outer edge, nd map neat original folds. G+ & VG cover & contents.

Leather bound. Condition: Incomplete. The Third Edition. Octavo. [1], viii, 441 pages, [1] page blank, [20] pages Index, [1] page advertisement, [1] page blank, [1]. Large folding map (approx. 20" x 16") in front is present. Missing the second folding map (possibly not bound in?). Marbled polished calf leather binding with red leather title label on the spine. Restored at one point in time. Both boards neatly reattached to the binding. Newer leather visible on the outer joints. Hinges are in good condition. Leather spine lightly faded and scuffed. Small hole in the upper right text margin from the title page disappearing by page 8. Map is not affected. Light toning to the map with a very tiny closed tear on the far left margin not affecting the content. The second called for map is missing. Text is lightly toned throughout. Previous owner signature top of the title page. Armorial bookplate of "W. D. Griswold Smith" on the front paste down. The bookplate is mostly covering up an earlier owner name in pencil. Incomplete due to a missing map.
