Signed first edition (First edition, first printing, signed by the author) THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERA Waterstones and TIMES HISTORY BOOK OF THE YEARA SPECTATOR and History Today BOOK OF THE YEARA revolutionary new history of the diffusion of Indian ideas, from the award-winning, bestselling author and co-host of the chart-topping Empire podcast‘Richly woven, highly readable . Written with passion and verve’ Spectator‘Dazzling . Not just a historical study but also a love letter’ Guardian‘An outstanding new account . The most compelling retelling we have had for generations’ Financial TimesIndia is the forgotten heart of the ancient world. For a millennium and a half, India was a confident exporter of its diverse civilisation, creating around it a vast empire of ideas. Indian art, religions, technology, astronomy, music, dance, literature, mathematics and mythology blazed a trail across the world, along a Golden Road that stretched from the Red Sea to the Pacific.William Dalrymple draws from a lifetime of scholarship to highlight India’s oft-forgotten position as the heart of ancient Eurasia. For the first time, he gives a name to this spread of Indian ideas that transformed the world. From the largest Hindu temple in the world at Angkor Wat to the Buddhism of China, from the trade that helped fund the Roman Empire to the creation of the numerals we use today (including zero), India transformed the culture and technology of its ancient world – and our world today as we know it.Praise for William Dalrymple and The Anarchy‘A superb historian with a visceral understanding of India’ The Times‘Magnificently readable, deeply researched and richly atmospheric’ Francis Wheen, Mail on Sunday.

(Minimally rubbed at extremities, traces of removed labels on upper pastedown and dustwrapper, dustwrapper slightly faded and creased at edges.) A very good copy. Provenance: Brigit ('Biddy') Ursula Hope Barlow and Erasmus Darwin Barlow, 2 October 2002 (1916-2004 and 1915-2005, autograph presentation inscription on title 'Biddy & Erasmus With best wishes Willie Dalrymple 2nd October 2002', apparently written in two campaigns, with the words '& Erasmus' and 'With best wishes' inserted into the inscription 'Biddy Willie Dalrymple 2nd October 2002'; their library at Digswell Manor, Ashwell, Hertfordshire) -- Wendy Ford, Ashwell, Hertfordshire, 14 May 2006 (printed booklabel on half-title, with manuscript note 'Bought house sale 14.05.06. Ashwell Digswell Manor' on 'Post-It' on half-title) -- G. David, Cambridge (bookseller's ticket on upper pastedown). ¶¶¶First edition. White Mughals marked a shift in Dalrymple's writing from travel-writing to a more historical style, and explores Anglo-Indian society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries through the life of James Achilles Kirkpatrick, examining the phenomenon that he terms 'transculturation', whereby the British and Indian characters permeated each others' cultures. It was the first title in Dalrymple's 'Company Quartet' -- the others are The Last Mughal (2006), Return of a King (2012), and The Anarchy (2019) -- and White Mughals won both the Woolfson Prize for History and the Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year Award. This copy appears to have been originally inscribed by the author to Biddy Barlow on 2 October 2002, and then at a later point Dalrymple has added the name of her husband, the physician and psychiatrist Erasmus Barlow, and the words 'With best wishes' with a different pen. Erasmus Barlow FRCPsych, FZS was the great-grandson of Charles Darwin, and was educated at Marlborough College, Trinity College, Cambridge (where Dalrymple had also studied), and University College Hospital. In addition to his roles as senior lecturer and honorary consultant in psychological medicine at St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, Barlow also served as Vice Chairman of the Mental Health Research Fund and Secretary of the Zoological Society of London. ¶¶¶FURTHER INFORMATION: please contact us for further information about this item and prices for shipping. hard. Condition: fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. Signed first edition (First edition, first printing, signed by the author) ‘Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures’ – Don McCullinJourneys Across Roman Asia Minor is driven by an eye for beauty and an ear for history. It is an album of the most recent photographs taken by Don McCullin, informed by a life full of hard-won experience. Working the ineffable magic of a master-craftsman, he frames an ancient sanctuary known to Homer, then focuses on the broken face of an exhausted emperor, before turning his eye on the sensuous torso of a goddess. While most of us were sheltering from Covid, Don explored the mountains, valleys and coast of western Turkey, hunting out the most poignant and powerful ruins of the Roman Empire. He has created a meditation on landscape, the effects of light on ancient stone, the way clouds animate the past, but it is also inescapably about past conflict. About conquest, about imperium, about power.Journeys across Roman Asia Minor shows us a world still packed full of enchantment and wonder. He shows us pavements once trodden by Aristotle and Alexander the Great, Caesar and Sulla, St Paul and Hadrian. Through his lens we view ancient theatres cascading down the slopes of mountains, two-thousand-year-old bridges still used by hill farmers, and find spring water flowing into fountains still dominated by statues of the gods.
