Offering 185 pieces (31 of them new) by 148 authors (18 of them new), "The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism" (2nd ed.) is more comprehensive & more varied in its selection than any other anthology. New selections from non-western theory & a thoroughly updated 20th century selection make the book even more diverse & authoritative. * "No serious student of literature can do without this anthology." - Henry Louis Gates * "So definitive & capacious that it renders all its predecessors instantly redundant. . . . With more ancient texts than anthologies that focus on 'the critical tradition,' more recent works than those specializing in 'contemporary literary theory,' & more of everything than everything, it is the mother lode, a pedagogical & professional tool of incomparable utility. . . ." - Geoffrey Galt Harpham, writing in the Kenyon Review. * "Particularly distinctive about this Norton is the excellence of the head-notes that situate the selections in the context of the critics' work & in critical & theoretical debate. I repeatedly found myself impressed buy the judiciousness w/ which they inform while avoiding the pitfall of explaining in advance the significance of the selection." - Jonathan Culler, writing in Symploke * "An astonishing achievement. Deeply informed, brilliantly edited." - Catharine R. Stimpson.
