In an attempt to foster this acquaintance that goes on for six years, Mr. Parham finds himself involved in séances that summon a Master Spirit from the beyond. This entity occupies Mr. Parham's body, and commences to inspire a political movement (the League of Duty Paramount) that overthrows the British government in a coup d'état. One of Wells' satirical novels. Sir Bussy Woodcock was a recognizable caricature of Beaverbrook, and other characters correspond to Joynson-Hicks and Oswald Mosley. Herbert George Wells (1866 1946) was an English writer, prolific in many genres. He wrote more than fifty novels and dozens of short stories. His non-fiction output included works of social commentary, politics, history, popular science, satire, biography, and autobiography. Wells' science fiction novels are so well regarded that he has been called the "father of science fiction". Sir David Alexander Cecil Low (1891 1963) was a New Zealand political cartoonist and caricaturist who lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. Low was a self-taught cartoonist. Born in New Zealand, he worked in his native country before migrating to Sydney in 1911, and ultimately to London (1919), where he made his career and earned fame for his Colonel Blimp depictions and his satirizing of the personalities and policies of German dictator Adolf Hitler, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and other leaders of his times. The binding remains remarkably sound and tight, though the original red cloth exhibits a prominent dark liquid stain to the rear board, visible internally at the very edg…e of the pastedown. The gilt lettering to the spine remains notably bright. The text block is squarely bound, presenting noticeable foxing and browning to the page edges and preliminary leaves, consistent with the standard paper stock of the era. The original unclipped dust wrapper, retaining the '7s. 6d. net' price, is in highly respectable condition, displaying some fading to the spine panel and mild rubbing to the extremities, but presenting beautifully overall as a complete example. Catalogue Note: This is a true first edition, first printing of H.G. Wells's prescient satirical novel, predating the American issue by a month. The volume is notably enhanced by ten double-page caricatures by the celebrated political cartoonist David Low, whose unmistakable style perfectly complements Wells's biting social commentary. Examples retaining their fragile original dust wrapper in complete, unclipped condition have grown increasingly uncommon. The jacket's striking front panel, depicting the titular Mr. Parham in dictatorial regalia, remains a prime example of interwar dust wrapper design. In this sharp political satire, H.G. Wells explores the intoxicating and corrupting nature of power through the lens of Mr. Parham, a conservative Oxford don who becomes possessed by a 'Master Spirit' during a sà ance. Transformed into 'Lord Paramount,' Parham stages a coup d'à tat and establishes a fascist dictatorship in Britain, launching a campaign of global conquest that ultimately spirals out of his control. A thinly veiled critique of contemporary figures like Oswald Mosley and Lord Beaverbrook, the novel stands as a brilliant, cautionary tale of authoritarianism and the fragility of democracy.
