There are no library markings other than the gilt to the spines. Both bindings are tight and clean and in almost fine condition. The Sud volume has the original tan wrappers bound in and possibly rebacked, at least the rear wrapper anyway. With 400 pages of text within 24 chapters. The Nord volume does not have the original wrappers bound in. With 571 pages in 31 chapters with 2 engraved plates, 2 textual illustrations and a folding map in the rear which may have been rebacked. Also the half title I believe has been rebacked ( all professionally done by the museum) with some occasional light scattered foxing. Francis de Castelnau (also known as François Laporte) was born in London, the illegitimate son of the Countess of Mesnard-La Barotière. Following the Amazon and La Plata river systems, the expedition yielded considerable scientific results in zoology, botany, mineralogy, and ethnography, alongside astronomical and hydrographical observations. Castelnau later served as French consul in Bahia, Siam, and Melbourne. The beautifully coloured plates make this a highly desired work for bibliophiles.
