Contact seller5-star sellercloth. 8vo. cloth. xii, 252 pages. A facsimile of the edition originally published by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 1952, Princeton, NJ (Besterman 574, Sheehy D50). A fine copy. The first in the series of Gennadius bibliographies on travels to Greece and the Near East. Describes 1206 travel books, voyages,…topographic works and guide books. The works of the travelers are arranged chronologically by date of publication and, within that date, alphabetically by author. Indexes of travelers and authors, as well as a general index. This is the first Martino edition as a separate book, published together with its companion (Voyages and Travels in Greece and the Near East to 1801) in 1997, and now out of print. "The 19th-century travelers moved in an age of stirring events: Napoleon's wars, revolutions in Greece and Turkey, the Crimean War, and developments in Egypt, Cyprus, and Palestine: each provoked interest and a flood of travelers. The conditions experienced by those travelling then have long since passed: long delays in quarantine or changes in route necessitated by outbreak of a plague in a crowded port; slow and stormy journeys over the sea and frequent shipwrecks; organization of camel caravans to cross deserts or stretches haunted by robbers--it is doubtful whether we shall ever have again such romantic, though often painful episodes in travel" (Preface). A basic reference in the field, and hard to find in the original edition. From the reference library of Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts with their bookplate included. Travel (illustrator).
